Yvette Mayorga: Meet Me at the Green Clock curated by Johalla Projects opened at the St. Jane Hotel December 5th, 2019 and will be on view through January 26th, 2020. This collaboration was inspired by Andy Warhol’s early career as a visual merchandiser and the iconic holiday windows at Marshall Fields, where Mayorga’s parents worked in the 1970’s when they first moved to the U.S. Speaking to our contemporary moment as a first generation Latinx female artist, Mayorga’s windows cause a pause in the celebration of the holiday season as she reimagines the shop windows as mirrors, as decadent and chaotic as our current state

The windows invite you into Mayorga’s personal history, as well as offer a sense of collective nostalgia with architectural references taken from Daniel Burnham’s Marshall Field’s building on State St. (now Macy’s), framed by the St. Jane’s glamorous 1920’s deco architecture. The artist’s parents worked at Marshall Fields in the 1970's as immigrants new to Chicago, her mother a baker and father a janitor. Referencing their labor through materials like cake frostings, she specifically ties their contributions to an architectural and historical landmark that holds such a particular legacy as one of the first department stores in the world.

Chicago-based artists Yvette Mayorga and William Estrada are creating a portrait series of Maxwell Street Market vendors, some of whom have over 40 years of history with the market. The artists invite everyone to take photos in front of the unique backdrop for the portraits, a collage of items treasured and sold in the market created by Yvette Mayorga. This commission is part of MAS+ ART at Maxwell, a creative placemaking initiative led by Paola Aguirre Serrano of Borderless Studio LLC.
